They’re all quite true, the quotes, and if you feel they aren’t - you’re just part of the assimilated heard.. the Borg. Do what fulfills you. I think maybe we should start calling it that way instead of love, so the people who say “not everybody does what they love in life” or “every job, no matter how much you love it, has its moments of hatred towards it”.
And in all matters, don’t settle. People will put you down for it, will say it in better sounding ways, why can’t you just settle? In ways that make you feel wrong, such as “You’re too picky, too pretentious” where all that means is you won’t settle to be miserable and make anyone else miserable, and bear children that will be miserable in a wrong environment, and you won’t spend 90% of your life feeling like you belong to someone else, because you do only what others approve of and what others give you a sense of being accepted into their “love”.
Fulfilling jobs aren’t just in the arts. Many people are fulfilled by accounting! I’ve seen it, otherwise, it’d be hard even for me to believe. People are fulfilled by sciences (where it’s quite hard, as things evolve in various lifetimes). People are fulfilled in every area you can think of. Avoid to be the doctor doing it just for the money and prestige, because you will kill innocent people with your apathy and greed. Avoid being the actor for fame (money and prestige), for you will make yourself fall harder than you think. Don’t do anything for the wrong reasons, or you will damage yourself and others. What happens when no one pays attention anymore because you’ve trashed a good living (whether a doctor or actor)?
And avoid being with someone just because other people like them, other people think you’re getting too old, other people think you are nothing without them. Avoid thinking that yourself - that you like them, you’ll put up with them, you’ll sacrifice yourself and your family and your kids, you’re not getting any younger, you’ve been too picky, you’re nothing without someone..without this particular person.
Or job. Or career. Or shoes. Or pants. Or phone. Or house.. be true to yourself, and don’t let anyone, even if it’s a billion people world, take your self-worth and live their life through you.
"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle." Steve Jobs
